The calculator shows the KJ or Calories that a person should eat to lose approximately 0.5 kilograms a week. It takes into account gender, level of physical activity, age and current weight.
A 0.5 kg loss per week equals an energy deficit of approx. 600 calorie or 2510 Kj per day.
Activity level descriptions:
Sedentary: Office job, sit down role and no regular exercise at all and drives to and from work; retired/not working/home bound and limited ability to exercise; aged and limited mobility; nursing home; no formal exercise and little or no incidental exercise.
Light: Office job with no formal exercise but does some non brisk walking/incidental exercise; recovering from injury and in exercise rehab; spritely aged person with some formal walking/gentle exercise/hydrotherapy; healthy but sedentary person, maybe does some yoga/pilates
Moderate: Office job but regular gym/exercise; someone on their feet all day (working or otherwise, busy mum ) and possibly not doing much other formal exercise; fit and healthy reasonably active person with regular moderate exercise per week; older but fit person 9 ie plays tennis a few times per week)
Heavy: Labourer; job with high level of physical activity either heart rate based or strength; high level recreational/elite/professional athlete
